The Home Economics faculty at Orange High School comprises of a hardworking and innovative team of dedicated teachers. Our staff are focused on providing a dynamic teaching and learning environment for all students. Our aim is to engage students with meaningful programs that reach out to the diversity of our student body. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of practical and extra curricula activities.
The Home Economics Faculty offers a range of subjects from Year 7 - 12 which include:
Year 7 and 8 Technology Mandatory
This course provides students with the opportunity to experience learning activies in both Food Technology and Textiles Technology. Each subject is studied for a semester. Students engage in a range of practical activities involving food production and textiles design projects.
Year 9 and 10 Courses
Students can choose between studying a 100 hour (1 year) or 200 hour (2 year) course from the following options:
Food Technology
This provides students with the opportunity to study topics such as food, nutrition, production and marketing. Students have the chance to design and produce foods on a weekly basis. They are able to design and plan, taste and evaluate meals for specific groups.
This course offers a broad knowledge base along with valuable practical skills.
Child Studies
This is largely a theory based subject whereby students develop knowledge on pregnancy, caring for babies, infants and toddlers, and providing for their nutritional and developmental wellbeing.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Real Life Simulated Baby Program. This allows each student to care for a simulated baby for a night to gain valuable experience in the care of an infant.
Textiles Technology
This is a practical skills based course using textiles materials and technologies to complete design projects.
Students learn about textile fabrics and design work.
This subject allows for creativity in students interests and capabilities and interests.

Hospitality: Commercial Cookery (VET)
Hospitality: Food and Beverage (VET)
The Hospitality courses are competency based courses which give students the capability to achieve a Certificate II in Hospitality. This opens up further career opportunities for students.
Extra Curricula Activities:
Students are given the opportunity to participate in many extra curricula activities.
These Include:
Hospitality catering events – the years 11/12 hospitality and Food and Beverage classes have catered for events such as weddings, NSW Education Minister Morning tea, Nashdale Night Markets, Orange Jobs Expo, staff morning teas and lunches.
- Special guests such as Kumar from Master chef came in for Senior Citizens functions
- Orange High School has a Trade Trading Centre facility in our Hospitality Kitchens. This kitchen has been used for E2 shared learning between Orange High School, Canobolas Rural Technology High School, Molong High School and Blayney High School.
- Our students have the opportunity to participate in the Western NSW Culinary Challenge each year.
